Ingredients

  • 4 ounces semisweet chocolate or 2/3 cup chocolate pieces
  • 5 tablespoons margarine, divided
  • 1-1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract, divided
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1 cup sugar, divided
  • 3 large eggs, divided
  • 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon flour, divided
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Method

Step 1

Melt chocolate with 3 tablespoons margarine. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and let cool.

Step 2

Grease a 9-in. baking pan. Heat oven to 350°. In a medium size bowl beat cream cheese, 1/4 cup sugar and remaining 2 tablespoons butter with wooden spoon. When smooth beat in one egg. Stir in 1 tablespoon flour, lemon juice and remaining 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla.

Step 3

Mix 1/2 cup flour, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Beat 2 remaining eggs with an electric mixer. Beat in remaining 3/4 cup sugar, 1/4 cup at a time, until thick and pale.

Step 4

With a rubber spatula fold the flour mixture into egg mixture, then fold in cooled chocolate.

Step 5

Reserve 1/4 cup of chocolate batter. Spread rest in bottom of pan. Pour cream cheese mixture over chocolate layer. Spoon reserved 1/4 cup of chocolate batter over top. Swirl knife through the two top layers to create a marbled effect.

Step 6

Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven and place on wire rack to cool.
