Ingredients

  • 5 slices day old bread *
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1/2 cup moist seedless raisins, optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar, divided
  • 3 eggs, beaten
  • 3 cups milk, scalded
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • whipped cream or cool whip

Method

Step 1

Toast bread and spread with butter while hot. Cut toast into cubes. Arrange in buttered 13-in. x 9-in. baking pan. Sprinkle with raisins.

Step 2

Stir salt and all but 2 tablespoons sugar into the eggs. Add scalded milk and stir to mix well. Pour over the toast and let stand 10 minutes.

Step 3

Press toast lightly down into toast a few times. Mix cinnamon with 2 tablespoons sugar and sprinkle on top.

Step 4

Place dish directly on oven rack. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean. Serve with whipped cream.

*I found a second version of this recipe that uses 8 slices, unbuttered.
