Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 pound filo dough, separated into sheets
  • 2 cups chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 3 sticks unsalted butter

Method

Step 1

Combine first 3 ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes until sugar is dissolved and syrup forms. Allow to cool.

Step 2

Combine nuts, 1/2 cup sugar and cinnamon.

Step 3

Melt butter. Brush some onto bottom and sides of a small cookie sheet. Layer half of filo dough and paint each layer with butter. Spread nut mixture over top layer. Layer remaining filo sheets painting each with butter. Cut into diamonds before baking. Bake at 300° for 1 hour. Pour cooled syrup over hot pastry. Allow to cool and set. Refrigerate until serving.
