Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 pounds ground beef
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 jar (15-1/2 ounces) extra thick spaghetti sauce
  • 2 teaspoons salt, divided
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni or other small pasta
  • 1/2 stick margarine
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • dry bread crumbs

Method

Step 1

Cook beef with onion, garlic and 1-1/2 teaspoons salt until browned, stirring occasionally. Stir in spaghetti sauce. Continue to cook and stir until mixture is thick enough to hold its shape. Remove from heat and cool.

Step 2

Cook macaroni according to package directions and drain. In the same pan, melt butter. Stir in flour and remaining salt. Cook 1 minute stirring constantly. Add milk until mixture thickens and bubbles.

Step 3

In a bowl beat the eggs Pour 1/2 of the white sauce into the eggs, beating constantly until well mixed. Return mixture to pan with remaining sauce. Cook 1 minute. Remove from heat. Stir in cheese and macaroni.

Step 4

Grease well 2 9-in. pie plates Sprinkle bottom and sides with bread crumbs. Spoon 2/3 macaroni mixture into pie plates. Spread into even layer to line bottom and up side to rim. Spoon meat mixture into center. Cover with remaining macaroni mixture. Sprinkle top with bread crumbs.

Step 5

Bake at 375° for 30 minutes. Let stand 15 minutes before serving.

Step 6

Pies freeze well before baking. Defrost overnight in fridge before baking.
